STARR Upper Peninsula Scholarship Regulations

• The student recipient must enroll at MSU for the semester that the scholarship is awarded. The award may not be deferred to a subsequent semester of initial enrollment.
• Awards are limited to eight consecutive semesters of undergraduate enrollment. If a STARR Scholar’s enrollment is disrupted due to extenuating circumstances, the student must notify the Program Coordinator in writing.
• The award, in the amount of $20,000, will be divided into equal installments, typically between the fall and spring semesters of the academic year.
• Use of funds in a summer semester requires prior approval from the STARR Scholarship Program Coordinator and will count towards your total semesters. Students wishing to take summer courses may do so based on the following proration:

*Total credits enrolled and completed during all combinations of a summer session.

• STARR Scholars must enroll in and complete a minimum of 15 credit hours each semester to complete their degree in a timely manner. If circumstances prevent meeting the 15-credit minimum or necessitate dropping below it, prior written approval from the STARR Scholarship Program Coordinator is required.
• The STARR scholarship functions as a last dollar award.  Federal, state, and private scholarships or grants are applied first, and the Scholarship will be used to fulfill any remaining qualifying financial expenses. Any exceptions must be approved by the STARR Scholarship Program Coordinator in consultation with the Office of Financial Aid.
• Financial aid and scholarships STARR Scholars receive during a semester with no STARR Scholarship disbursement will not reduce or otherwise affect the STARR Scholarship in other semesters.
• STARR Scholars are expected to maintain a minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale during the first year of attendance and a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA for each subsequent semester. The academic records will be reviewed at the end of each semester.
• STARR Scholars are expected to participate in scholarship-related activities that foster engagement with faculty and staff and support personal, professional and career development.
